In southeastern Pennsylvania, late September is one of those unique turning points during the year. The leaves haven’t fully turned, the weather is still quite warm, and fall hasn’t quite taken hold. Philadelphia Cricket Club wedding photos are still full of green, and if you’re a couple who loves summer color, you have one last window to pack it all in before the season turns.
This time of year, couples either choose to embrace the impending season change or hang onto the last dregs of summer in the air. Jena and James selected a vibrant, happy blue and white color palette with peach accents that equally embraced both seasons. Their summer-to-fall wedding color scheme, plus the Mummers string band during their wedding reception, resulted in one of the most joyful weddings I’ve photographed in St. Martins Clubhouse at this historic Chestnut Hill venue!

The History of Philadelphia Cricket Club
The Philadelphia Cricket Club is one of my most highly photographed venues. From past club members going on to win Wimbledon and Olympic titles, to golf greens dating back to the 1850s, PCC is a storied venue full of historic charm. It’s also just three miles from the stunning UPenn Morris Arboretum & Gardens.

If you’re curious about the full scope of what PCC offers — the grounds, the floor plans, the light — I put together a complete Philadelphia Cricket Club wedding venue guide that covers it all. What I’ll say here is that the oldest country club in America is also one of the most photogenic, and Jena and James knew exactly what to do with it.
A Hybrid Late Summer and Fall Wedding Color Scheme
Blue, white, and peach is a combo that’s classic and warm enough to still feel like summer. Blue and white anchored the look, while the florals by Olivia Lucas Design swept through in cascading arrangements of orange, peach, pink, and blue that leaned just slightly toward fall without quite giving into it. Against PCC’s white architectural backdrops, the contrast was everything. This reception decor just popped.

Getting Ready at The Union League Liberty Hill
Both Jena and James spent their morning at The Union League Liberty Hill in Lafayette Hill. The details came out first: Jena’s dress, her bouquet of oranges, peaches, pinks, and blues by Olivia Lucas Design, and tucked into the stems, a silver brooch with a portrait of her grandmother. The details that matter most are always the quietest ones.

The invitation suite by Sarah Timmons is the kind you preserve in a frame or a wedding memory album — a custom watercolor landscape of the Philadelphia Cricket Club that feels less like stationery and more like the opening page of a story. That level of care at the very beginning of a wedding tells you a lot about the overall feel guests will experience!
First Look Philadelphia Cricket Club Wedding Photos
The first look happened in the Union League Liberty Hill courtyard, which the couple had reserved for exactly this moment.

I loved James’s reaction to Jena during their first look. He threw up his hands in the universal, wordless reaction that means “what business do you have looking THIS good? And what did I do to deserve this girl standing in front of me?”
The way he looked at her said it all!

Their sweet goldendoodle, Chase, even made a brief but very important appearance after their first look to pose for a few photos in his dapper blue bowtie. He had to be aware he was completely stealing the moment!

The Ceremony at The Church of St. Martin In the Fields
From Liberty Hill, the wedding party made their way to The Church of St. Martin In the Fields in Chestnut Hill — just a short drive from the reception — where Reverend Mary Barber officiated the ceremony. When Jena and James walked back up the aisle together, the church bells rang.

After the receiving line, we slipped away to sign the church registrar — a quiet, formal moment that felt beautifully meaningful after everything that had just happened.

A Reception That Became Mardi Gras
The Sid Miller Band carried the reception from first dance through dinner and at 9PM, the Mummers arrived. When a saxophone, an accordion, a banjo, a drum, and a cello walk into a reception hall together, the evening takes on a life of its own. For anyone not from Philadelphia: the Mummers are a city tradition unlike anything else, string bands in elaborate costumes who perform with an energy that turns a room inside out.

Jena and James both graduated from Susquehanna University, and their SU crew turned out for an epic group photo during cocktail hour!
Jena made her re-entrance in a beaded dress that was made for dancing; guests grabbed parasols, drinks were in hand, and the whole ballroom moved together. It was like Mardi Gras arrived in Philadelphia for one evening and nobody objected.

The receptions I never forget are the ones where the energy builds on its own and the dance floor never really clears. Jena and James gave their families and guests something genuinely memorable, and it showed in every frame of their Philadelphia Cricket Club wedding photos gallery!
