Rittenhouse Square is one of my favorite places in Philadelphia for a fall engagement session. Amy and Chas’s mid-October session captured the urban feel of one of the city’s oldest squares alongside a natural backdrop of dense foliage, all within a single square block. A canopy of trees shades every pathway and gives the whole space a neighborhood-park feel instead of a concrete-jungle one. Between the benches, the fountains, the stone sidewalks, and local cafes just off the green, the number of backdrops for your Rittenhouse Square engagement photos is overwhelming in the best way!
Walking around and exploring everything this neighborhood gem has to offer is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. I’m happy to simply guide you with my camera, catching every sweet and candid moment as it happens.

Why Rittenhouse Square Works So Well for Fall Engagement Photos
Rittenhouse Square is an 11-acre park in the neighborhood of the same name, and it’s one of Philadelphia’s oldest, dating back to the late 17th century. It’s full of trees and benches and regularly hosts art shows and craft fairs. There is a definite lived-in and creative energy to the place that comes through in photos.
I’ve photographed at Rittenhouse Square many times, in every season, and it holds up beautifully no matter when a couple books. Spring brings soft blooms, summer fills the trees in completely, and winter opens up the light through bare branches. But October might be my favorite. The foliage turns, the temperature is comfortable, and the square feels alive with color and movement.
For couples searching for fall engagement photos in Philadelphia, this is one of the easiest places to recommend. You don’t have to drive between locations, and the variety is already here, layered into a few connected pathways.

Amy and Chas’s October 14th Engagement Session
On the day of Amy and Chas’s fall engagement session, it was cloudy and breezy with a perfect temperature just below 70 degrees. Those overcast skies turned out to be a gift, giving us soft, even light everywhere we wandered, with no harsh shadows to work around.
They came prepared with two fall engagement session outfits that fit the season perfectly. And somehow, we captured 14 distinct backdrops in their one-hour session! We moved through Rittenhouse Square itself and then out onto the beautiful residential backstreets nearby. The light and the brick and the quiet corners gave us a completely different feel from the start of the session.

Engagement sessions are where I really get to know a couple and how they are together, and by the end of this one I felt as though I’d known Amy and Chas forever. They are so lovely and kind, and it showed in every frame!
Digital And Film Hybrid Engagement Photos
This session was primarily digital, but as a hybrid digital and film photographer, of course I had to bring along a few Polaroids! These Rittenhouse Square engagement photos on film were the cutest vintage addition to Amy and Chas’s gallery. I love slipping instant photos into a session like this. It gives the couple something tangible to hold onto, a small analog keepsake alongside the full digital gallery. It’s a simple, intentional touch, and it fits the unhurried way these two moved through their afternoon.

Planning Your Own Rittenhouse Square Engagement Session
Because I’ve shot here across every season, here’s what I tell couples when they’re planning Rittenhouse Square engagement photos of their own. Consider this your quick reference guide before your session.
| Rittenhouse Square Engagement Session Details | Insight From A Philadelphia Engagement Photographer |
|---|---|
| Best light | Overcast days give soft, even light anywhere in the square! On sunny days, the hour before sunset filters beautifully through the tree canopy. |
| Best Backdrops | Benches, the central fountains, stone pathways, garden plantings, and the residential streets just off the square make for perfect photo backdrops. We can easily capture 10 to 14 distinct looks in one visit. |
| Best seasons | I’ve photographed here during spring blooms, full summer greenery, October foliage, and bare-branch winter light. All of them work! |
| Session length | One hour is plenty of time to move through several backdrops without feeling rushed. |
| What to wear | Two outfits let you shift from a polished city look to something softer. Seasonal colors read beautifully against the foliage. |
| Crowds | It’s an active neighborhood park, so weekday mornings and early afternoons tend to be the calmest if you’d prefer fewer people around. |
